Hamlet of Callicoon – Overview
Callicoon is a charming hamlet in the Town of Delaware, located along the banks of the Delaware River in Sullivan County, New York. Known for its small-town hospitality, scenic beauty, and vibrant arts scene, Callicoon blends historic charm with modern creativity. Its Main Street features 19th-century architecture, boutique shops, farm-to-table restaurants, and a strong sense of community. The hamlet’s location along the river makes it a popular destination for fishing, kayaking, and nature walks.
Historical and Cultural Context
Founded in the mid-19th century, Callicoon developed as a commercial and transportation hub thanks to the Erie Railroad and the river’s role in regional trade. The hamlet’s name, derived from the Dutch word “kollikoon” meaning “wild turkey,” reflects its early frontier heritage. Over the decades, it has maintained much of its historic character, with restored buildings and preserved streetscapes that capture the feel of a bygone era. Community events, like farmers’ markets and festivals, celebrate both its agricultural roots and its contemporary creative culture.
Today’s Callicoon

Seasonal events, live music, art shows, and a growing food scene make it an attractive getaway. Whether strolling along the river, enjoying a performance at a local venue, or exploring the surrounding countryside, visitors often find Callicoon offers a unique combination of relaxation and inspiration.
