Location: Town of Lumberland
The Town of Lumberland was founded in 1798 and covers approximately 49 square miles in southwestern Sullivan County. It includes the hamlets of Glen Spey, Pond Eddy, Mongaup, Hillside, and Mohican Lake. Originally known as South Lebanon, it began as a rugged farming area before industrial-era figures like George Ross Mackenzie and William Proctor arrived in the late 1800s. They built estates in Glen Spey, including the schoolhouse that now serves as Town Hall. Glen Spey remains a blend of natural beauty, historic architecture, and small-town character.
Lumberland’s history is tied to farming, lumbering, quarrying, and the Delaware & Hudson Canal, which opened in 1828. Canal-era communities such as Pond Eddy and Mongaup emerged along its banks. Though the canal ceased operations in the late 1800s, its path became Route 97. Several historic landmarks—including canal-era buildings and the iconic Pond Eddy Bridge—still evoke that heritage.
Today, Lumberland remains rural and peaceful, with no traffic lights and just one gas station in Glen Spey. It preserves its natural landscapes—mountainous, forested, and bordered by rivers—through places like Circle Park and the Town Hall Museum Room, and supports a cultural series featuring concerts in a restored concert hall. Outdoor recreation like kayaking, hiking, and wildlife watching capitalizes on the town’s inclusion in the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River corridor.

Artist: Todd Anderson
Todd C. Anderson, a native of Sullivan County, considers himself a creator of art. He received his BFA in Painting from SUNY New Paltz. However, his education and love of art started when he was very young with just a sketchbook, a pencil and a vibrant imagination. He thinks of artists as craftspeople: they’re storytellers and matchmakers between the material world and the spiritual realm. He finds inspiration from his study of nature and the spirit sciences like chakras, states of being/I am, vibrations and the Akasha. His materials vary from driftwood, stone, wire, paper, wax, paint, or simply a blank canvas. Todd strives to ignite a spirited dance between these materials and his imaginative artistic vision. DOVE INSPIRATION: Inspired by the “I have a dream” speech by Dr. King, he thought about the power of dreams and how important they were then and also now. How one small dream like the flapping of butterfly wings has the power to create larger dynamic effects that manifest later in our lives. This ripple effect can change the world. Make a wish, believe, and give your dreams wings to soar.
